Opening up a can with that question!

If it's large enough, enough watts and flow is about right- definitley proven to.

Sterilizers can get expensive. They will certainly help with green and brown algae. I'm pretty sure red slime has to be addressed at the source of it. If you get one invest in a nice one and look at how much replacement lamps are. I think every 10 months its recommended to replace them.

luckily no red slime at the momment just what appears to some brown and green , I took all live rock out and hosed it down and cut back on lights and feeding , hopefully it will work but I am tempted to get a UV sterilizer if it truly works..

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
A decent UV will not hurt anything but your wallet.

There is tons of evidence to suggest that while they do not eradicate parasites, pathogens and algae they can make a notable dent in the general issue of concern.

If I had a sump I would run one and I run no other equipment.

My thoughts on how effective they are and what detriment they might cause has changed considerably.

This is an old discussion, some believe they help, others think they kill the good stuff, many opinions on flow rate. I run one, and have not seen any ill effects, but cant prove it helps either. Makes ME feel better though. My LFS has HUGE ones on their coral tanks, and they are beautiful, so I figure it cant hurt.
