The reality of pets "not at home" saddens me... But the video just expounds there stress. thank goodness for people who can bear to work with them daily.
My hat is off to those that can manage...adopt a pet if you can. : )

I think that was my sister's old cat!! I offered to take care of the "problem" for her through a loooooong walk so she wouldn't dump another un-adoptable pet on the shelter! She declined, I'm sure the cat got the needle first thing at the shelter... it was CRAZY!!

It is sad with how many people just dump off their problem animals to pounds and that! I voluntereed at one for about a year and half mainly cleaning cages but sometimes helping people select animals for adoptions and playing with the cats and kittens, and occasionally pups and dogs.

The shelter I worked at was not a no-kill shelter but it was also not one of those that you would walk in and see cages where it had Monday, Tuesday etc on the cage...indicating when the animal was to be euthanized. I walked into a small shelter that had that on the cages of the dogs and I swear I think that was cruel and just causing more problems! Cause I was there to get a cat and wondered into the dog section just to look  and saw all these cages with these signs up with the dates on there. I went to the cage that had that days sign up and there were like 2 cages with 10 dogs in there...just knowing what was going to happen! And of course it was 4:00pm that day....I wanted to take everyone home! But I couldnt take any dogs home..I had enough dogs! But I wonder how many people adopted a dog just because of that and then got home and realized that was not the right dog for them

The shelter I worked at did not assign dates to euthanize...instead they would keep them as long as possible. Even the troubled animals and try to work with them..bring in specialists and such to work to try to get them controlled. They also did not just euthanize certain high risk breeds such as pit bulls which was good.

Instead what they did was keep them until they could not take any other animal in...then they would have to make some hard decisions. Sometimes people would volunteer to take an animal home to foster, other times they would have to euthanize! But there were animals there that would stay for very long times. And that was what was cool about volunteering...I got to go play and help keep them socialized.

They limited many of the volunteers to cats, kittens and puppies because the dogs were a little more unpredictable. However they had a very trained staff to deal with the dogs and once a dog was cleared we could go in and play with those dogs also.

I also believe in Rescue Organizations! I adopted my best dog ever from a pug rescue...he was a breeder from a puppy mill and they came in and closed her down after she killed a bunch of pugs due to heat...they moved from Alaska to MO in middle of summer and pugs can not breath in heat! Oscar..the avatar dog was absolutly the best dog I have ever had and I have donated some to them and even drove a dog to a new owner once!

When I was in the grooming dept a looooonnnggg time ago, there were certain visitors that would have a leash and harness attached at all times. The end of the leash would be placed to the outside of the kennel. Boy, I remember being scared to get some of them out.
