So I really want a wave maker or vortech but is it worth it? How beneficial is it? It will be for my new 90G setup I would like a 50x overturn. Of course I want to save money so I am sure the vortech are out but what Power heads would you guys recommend and if you think a wave maker is great include that. I was thinking Koralia evo but I really do not know. Please options and opinions!

some people say wave makers are beneficial, most don't think they matter that much with a proper powerhead setup.
wavermakers are really for your enjoyment, if your gonna bother to get a wave maker you may as well either get a wavebox or a couple vortechs, to get real wave motion.

I have the vortec mp40 and it has a wavemaker function. I got to reading up on wavemakers in tanks and have seen warning about it stressing the tank and possibly causing premature failure. I dont run it in that mode due to not wanting to take a chance of my tank failing. I can tell you that this pump moves alot of water and you would be extremely happy with one IMPO.

the Vortech looks like a fantastic product to me, but I have never had one so cant offer any comments

Wavemaker type power heads - wide flow and a lot of water being moved

Korallias are excellent IMO , I like to have 2 or 3 or more of them , so I can adjust water movement and direction within the tank

I went with Koralia Evolutions 1400's and a Reefkeeper Lite controller.

I have heard many wonderful things about the Vortec but you also hear and see horror stories too. I visited a local reefers house last week end and she has a MP-40 on her display. She says its already been replaced under warranty once and it still makes noise and vibrates. Worse yet the buttons have fallen off the controller so it has open holes in front!

The products need much more development but she did say their customer support was top notch.

Thank you guys that helps a lot. So I decied not to get a wave maker or a vortech cause I would use it as a wavemaker and that would be pointless. Next question is should I get koralia evo or just stick with a regular koralia? If there are any other good powerheads what should I get?

On my 90, I run two koralia evo 1400 and use a ocean pulse duo to switch them every minute or so. It works great for me.

Think I am going to stay away from a wave maker for now. Do you just have 2 koralia evo 1400?

i have the 48" 120 gallon and i run 4 evo 1400s and still could use a little more but i do love the evos, i did run them with my RKL for about 2 months but i was thinking that only running 2 at a time i am losing the full use of haveing 4 run all the time and i am still getting a great random flow pattern.

I have 2 Vortech MP40 ES on my 90g. Great flow, and lots of options. However, if you want a dead-silent tank, these are not a good option for you. They do make a little bit of a hum as they work, especially if you run them at high speeds. Am I happy with mine? Yes. Do I wish they were quieter? Yes. Would I switch? Only if a quieter brand came out that did as many things and were as small in the tank as the vortechs.
