    So,
I've installed a DIY PVC overflow, have a 10 gallon tank for the sump, and a return pump. Now the big question, what's good to be in the sump?

I'm thinking about putting a chamber where the overflow comes into the sump, and putting bio balls there. Then a baffle, into a larger chamber with live rock. (I dont have a protien skimmer). From there, the water would go through a sponge type medium, a chemi-pure bag, and then to the up pump.

    ideas? thoughts? suggestions?

I'm new to this whole wet/dry thing and open for any ideas.

    bump again, and update.

So I have the 10 gallon sump setup, I have the tank water coming in via a 1" PVC overflow I built and it runs into a small trashcan that I converted into a bio-ball container. I drilled a bunch of 1/6" holes in the bottom and put a filter cartridge from my emperor HOB in the bottom (one of the ones that has the blue filter floss on it and charcoal in it. From there is just drops into the sump which right now is empty. I stuck some filter bags with more charcoal in them at the bottom of my baffle that is between the sump portion and the area for the return pump.

What I'm really looking for are suggestions on what to put in the main sump chamber area. I know there are a thousand different solutions and ideas, which is why I want to hear what has and has not worked for you guys.

I have some base rock laying around that I could put in my display tank and put the cured LR in the sump - but with LR in a sump do you have to have a light? What else are good ideas to be in the sump?

    Thanks!

You can put the LR in the sump. I have a 75g sump with about 130lbs of LR in it with the skimmer and heater. I also have all my probes in there too.

Your sump should be a place to put all the stuff that clutters a tank up.

Anyway you can use something larger than a 10g for a sump? Your options are kinda limited with a sump that size. It is better than nothing.....don't get me wrong. If that is what you are able to do, I would baffle it off down the middle, have the input to the sump be the fuge and put in a DSB with a type of algae that likes quick flow. The other half would have all your gear, your return pump and I would do a HOB filter or skimmer on the sump side as well. That otta fill it up. .........or you can do a 20g long and have room to spare.
