so just so i understand. does a wet skim mean you have the water level higher in the skimmer and a dry skim mean to have the water level lower??

is it your own personal choice which you prefer or is 1 better than the other??

From what I understand, when you wet skim, you actually remove more waste but you also remove more water and have to empty the collection cup more. Dry skim, you get just a really thick black scum that accumulates in the collection cup but you can go longer without emptying the cup. I wet skim just because work on my tank everyday anyways and if wet skimming does what i have been told, then all the better for me.

wet skimming means you will have more water into the collection cup. If you're wet skimming, be careful that you have enough room in the collection cup, or a drain from the collection cup to a waste container to hold all of the wet skimmate.

I like doing wet skimmate water changes at least once a week, where I will skim off 5-10 gallons of water at a time into a bucket and replace it with newly mixed salt water. The water I skim out is usually very brown compared to the tank water. Sometimes I'll fill two 5 GAL buckets with brown water... If it runs clear, then I feel like there is nothing left to skim.

Otherwise, I set my skimmer to dry skim when I'm not around, mostly to avoid flooding the waste container, and also so I'm not replacing water when not needed.

yes the higher the water level is in the skimmer the wetter the skim will be.
