Hello everyone. I am new to saltwater and this site. I have been reading alot of posts of the last few days and there is alot of good info hear.

So far I have a 40g glass breeder tank 36"x15"x16", Fluval 305 canister filtration system, Tetra Whisper 60 gallon air pump, Penguin 1140 submersible power head measured at 300gph, and 50 lbs of live sand. Now I am in the market for a protein skimmer and lighting.

I would like to do Live rock, soft coral, inverts, and a few fish. I would also like to stay under $200. But I want something that will keep my tank clean and the water safe. I also heard for a sump I can just use a 10 or 20 Gallon tank and put the Skimmer in there. Would this be a good idea, and what else would I need to make a sump.

Any info on this products or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You

P.S. I work at petco and can buy anything there for a discount, but our salt water selection is pretty limited?

IMO, and from what I have heard from others, seaclone's are absolute garbage.
I recommend the octopus BH-100F. I use it on my 40 and love it. Usually goes for around $150-$160

    avoid seaclone like the clap.
a sump is just a area for equipment to go in. so as longs there is some way to get water too it and back in the tank it is ok.

eventually you may want a refugium so you may want to plan for that

i recommend a octopus skimmer or coralife skimmer.

you will probably be able to find a coralife on ebay for cheap

All depends if you're going with a sump or not & budget. I personally have a Seaclone 100 in my 29gal. I needed one that hung on the back on my tank & for the price it caught my eye. Skims fine & have had it running for over a year now. The only thing is when connecting make sure the tubes are locked in place, also make sure that the water level coming out of the skimmer back into the tank is not so high that it's touching the arcylic cylinder. This will cause salt build up. I bought mine on ebay for around $65.00 shipped. That was new.. Last thing, it can be a little touchy on the fine tuning, but for the price what the heck. If you're going with a sump, I won't go with it though.

Cool. The one I recommended is a hang-on model, not for in the sump. But if you decide to run a sump you could still always just hang it on that. Octopus also makes in-sump models if that's the way you want to go.

coralife skimmer, Home Garden, skimmer items on eBay.com

the skimmer pump on the seaclone can compete the with the one on the coralife.

a coralife would be a much better investment. ive met about 2 people in all my life that got a seaclone to work well and many more who havent. there is a difference in price between too but you want to get a good skimmer since its the main filtration device.

Wow there are some really cheap coralife skimmers on ebay.

If this $80 one would work, then i am down. Is there a specific model coralife skimmer that you would recommend.

it should work fine. just set up bubble line above the red line.
one thing though is the bubble difuser with the skimmer has problems. but you can fix it buy replacing the pads with normal white filter like they sell at petco(one people put carbon in for HOB filters)..
there are some more easy and simple mods you can do too if that doesn't work. but wait for a week or so before trying any of them because skimmers produce micro bubbles before breaking in.

i have a 125, the only thing i did to mine was replace the diffuser box(bit big on small tanks because im using it as a hob). i also replaced the tube with pvc. note i didn't have to do any of these when it was in my sump only when i moved to a smaller tank with out a sump..

also john you are the second one lol
