    Hello all,

I have a new 60g setup that has been running for a few weeks. I put cured LR and started noticing things grown on the rocks. Most of it has been algae but the there is a couple of things that I don't know what they are. I have one rock that has some small dark spots that seem to be sprouting somehting and was hoping some one could tell be what it might be. If it is bad I want to get it out before it gets established and if its good then if I know what it is I can make sure that I provide it with the right things.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
It is a marine macro algae, can not remember the name right now others will though.

While it's not listed on this site/link. The link is an excellent resource for ID things that will be popping up.

This is a new one for me. Never seen this before! It kind of reminds me of a plant of some kind and if it moves on its own, then probably a worm of some kind. If you can't find out what it is soon, then just remove it. Actually chip that whole part of the rock away. Scraping it may not do anything and it may end up growing back. If you see something new and really don't know what it is always remove it! Better safe than sorry in my opinion!

    Could be Neomeris annulata.

Or the tendrils left over from Calpura, which you will have to keep and eye on.

Honestly it could be a lot of algae types just too small to make an accurate ID for me.

what ever it is, it seems to be stiff since it does not move even thought it is right in the flow of my power head. The other algae around that area has lots of movement from the flow but that just sits still.

Looks harmless. See what it does.

I find it disappointing when others say if in doubt ditch it/kill it. I got a piece of LR a few years ago that had what looked like a tiny white ball of sponge. The LFS told me to scrape it off when i got home. I didn't. 3 years later its a colony of 14 polyps of caribbean long tentacled palythoa which is worth a great deal and no one I know has one.

I think I will let it go for a while and see what happens. I would hate for it to be something really cool or rare and I didn't give it a chance to show what it is. If it turns out to be something bad then I will deal with it then.

Glad to hear it. If it grows a bit post up again and maybe we can ID it then.
