I ran Zeovit for about 3 years. I had wonderful results and not a total waste of money. but it's not for everyone and very good results can be obtained by not running Zeovit.
With my current tank issues I stopped Zeovit and a bunch of other thinks I was doing to try and find a reason for my problems. Zeovit was not the cause as my issues continued long after I stopped.

I continue to use some of the products and might start up again but for now I'm just trying to get my tank stable

To Break Zeovit down to the basic process.

You are adding a bacteria to your system that feeds on the Phosphates and Nitrates in your system. In order for that feeding to take place other elements need to be present, carbon and a sugar. The sugar is added via other Zeovit products and Carbon is Carbon. As all tanks have bacteria present it is important to ensure that the Zeovit Bacteria is the one that is being fed. This is how some Zeovit users early in the process woll have cyano out breaks and get discouraged.
No this bacteria lives through out the system and is in the ZeoReactor that houses the Zeolith Rock. Shacking this rock frees the bacteria to be free floating in your water and becomes food for corals.
This is the function of the base 4 Zeovit products. there are plenty more products that also have benifitial effects to the coral in your tank

The system is broken into two parts as far as I can tell.

Part 1 Nutrient export / control

    Part 2 Suppliments

You can use one or the other or both.

I am interested in the suppliments myself. My nutrient export is awesome thanks to John, and have no need for another option when mine works. I have seen some tanks that have just used the suppliments and they look fantastic. I have noticed that most improvements are made with SPS however.

So why not vodka dose? There are many less expensive options for nutrient export. The supplements might be cool. How does their LPS supplement work?
