I am setting up a 20 gallon, and was wanting to know what most of you are using for sand, is smaller grain size better or anything else that can help me choose?

I prefer medium grain sand. Some have said the crushed coral is good for trapping detritus, which I hate!!! and small grained sands seem to fly around the tank with the amount of current i have in the tank.

I use sugar sized oolitic, it's great for sand sifters and soft bellies, like rays and sharks. It is also great for buffering the tank with natural elements.

I use fine oolitic sand as well. I like the fact that bottom dwelling organisms can handle this type of sand better. I think it looks better and depending on your water flow, you should be fine with the sand not blowing if the flow is strategically arranged based on the powerheads.

I have a aragonite mix 80 % small and 20% large grain size. I wish I would have tossed it and went with sugar oolite.
I don't have any problems with it yet ... just a personal preference for me.

Yep .. don't just get sugar / small size sand.. Make sure it's aragonite... specifically oolite.

sugar sized oolitic aragonite it blows around a bit and can cloud your tank but damn it looks good and does the job right.....plus the shape of the sand grains help surface area ie more bacteria to clean the sand..... imo...i may be wrong but it has worked for me...
