my work has offered to give a 60 gallon tank but the thing is that it is only 8 inches tall is this to shallow to keep fish in and if so what kind can i not put in.

idk if I will take it it dosent even have a overflow or a stand

The only thing that realy is makinging me think about it is bseezy's tank http://www.3reef.com/forums/show-off-your-fish-tanks/bsweezy-150-gallon-reef-tank-68964.html but his thank is 12 inches tall and it is 120 gallon but same shape.

    what do you guys think

I think if you have the time and money go for it, it could be a major coral farm/learning tank. I would just try to drill several over flow and several returns

Just to add on what has been said already, the depth of the tank doesnt mean anything when it comes to fish. Depth is more important when it comes time to make a decision on the lighting system. If its a 60g tank with only 8" in height, that tank sounds like a frag tank. But you can use it as a fish tank if you want.

I say go for for it, especially if you have any interest in SPS corals. The 8" depth gives you more lighting options than a deeper tank allows. The other option you could consider is a ecosystem patterned tank after a tidepool or shallow lagoon.

It looks like a great opportunity to get a bit more creative than most standard tanks allow us to be, have fun with it, i'll be following along to see what you come up with :)

I think it would be good for tangs, it at least give them 6 ft of length to swim. It could be a really cool tank, it just depends on how you do it. I would take it just b/c it's free.
