Ok here are my options...I am setting up a 265G reef... It came with a huge trickle filter (i've never been much of a fan of) BUT i have the room to run a refugium off of it say (30G or so), or I could try and find a 70-90 gallon tank and baffle it into an all in one type deal (which would be more difficult..)...what do you guys think would be the best way to do this...and safest too.. Here is the build thread http://www.3reef.com/forums/show-off-your-fish-tanks/its-time-major-upgrade-97906.html

I have a trickle filter on my 70 reef. Nothing wrong with it! All your opinion.

Trickle filters have their uses. I like replacing the bio balls with LR rubble though.

Do you have a pic of the filter?

I converted my trickle over to a plain sump and added a 30 Gal refugium to the side of it. I elevated the refugium higher than the sump. Drilled it towards the top, so it overflows into the return section. This was in an attempt to get more live food to the display.

+1 on jonjon (yet again), I like the idea of having as much water in the system as possible.

You may be able to use the filter as a sump only.

Here is a pic of the trickle filter that came with it....i put a 20oz coke bottle for size comparison. I like your idea with adding an additional fuge...i have the room and capability to do so, but i just dont know HOW to do it safely, so that it will never overflow/go dry...
