so help a newbie out here, since windex is bad what do you use to clean the glass (if anything)?

Also, just out of curiousity how does using windex outside hurt what's inside? Do the fumes transfer into the water, or is there are another issue?

I have used it myself still do , I don't spray it into the tank just a few sprays on the glass then wipe :) But I have seen the mist to be pulled in the hoods by the fans But its never caused any harm that I could see water works also But It will streak a tad sometimes from the salt.

I simply use water. If its an acrylic surface, coralife makes a very nice acrylic surface polisher i use for wipe downs, better than the novus stuff.

windex isnt some mystical killer force.. its just that it has has ammonia in it and any stray mist droplets that get into the water is bad.. you can always do what i do: spray the windex onto the paper towel in another room, then wipe down the glass, just use caution around the top. Along these lines, dont come home drunk and pee in your tank either, same result.

My wife had gotten a cleaning lady once (long story short) she had used windex to clean the glass and the very next day all the water was green. I lost a couple of corals and I had to buy a $140.00 UV filter to clear up the water. I dont know " how " she cleaned the glass, but the effects where very obvious. Ever since then I just use two pieces of paper towel, 1 wet with tap water and the other dry. I was always told that the tank(system) is one big sponge, that will "absorb" all chemicals and fumes that are used around it. Dont know if this is true or not, but I never had a problem cleaning it the way I do and see no reason to change.

newspaper works wonders on glass, doesnt leave a streak. and whatever is in the air around the tank will get into the tank, period.

Hmmmm....everything in the air? maybe that explains why all my fish wear jamacian beanies and cant swin straight.......JK im drug free. (woot, and id like to say the same for the rest of the teen population but i cant)

#1 fault. Never, ever, ever feed brine shrimp without making sure you didnt accidentily drop in a shell, cause some fish (clowns, lol) aint smart enough to tell and you will have a floatin fish like my 1st clown.

#2, dont put the adjustment valve on your skimmer higher to compensate for lack of topp off system so you actually get skimmate and go on the computer (specifically 3reef) and forget that your skimmer is dumping 5 gallons a minute on the floor.......

I'm a constant screw ball...I'm extremely new at this, but I guess my biggest mistake was buying a crappy mechanical filter.....

Another disaster was to buy a blue tang when I only have a 46 gal tank.....the LFS guy, I guess trying to make a sale, sold me the baby blue tang telling me it wouldn't grow very large if my tank was not big enough....anyway, I overstocked the tank, my water turned green, i lost a clown, the blue tang and sand siftin goby in the proccess...all in all, I had to buy a UV sterelizer, didn't cost me much, but I had to buy it.....

I did clean the outside of my tank with Windex, and according to Luna that stuff can turn your tank water green...well, I'm not taking that chance any more....using plain old paper towels with water now.....

fish are one of the only creatures on this planet that dont stop growing until death.
