I got to thinking today, what if i did something different with my prop tank. Every prop tank you see is basically just some egg crate frag holders!

Would you do the egg crate or kinda turn it into a reef? As in do a rock stack that has lots of room for corals, and then add some sand?

does this make the tank less efficent?

confused and looking for some others thought on this!

The reason why ppl use the eggcrate in frag tanks is b/c you get alot more "real estate" from it than using LR. Reef tank or a Frag tank.......its all up to you.

True thats the only reason i havent pulled the trigger and done a rock stack or added sand, for the reason that i would probably get 75% more room

    Prop

Hey Ocean, I've got a prop/frag 60g tank. I used a pvc frame, with varying levels (height) closer to the surface/light.......like 7-8" each stage covered with eggcrate. Its actually a rack that sits in the tank on the sand about 2 1/2ft by 13" (1/2" PVC, white eggcrate, plastic ties). I put the appropriate frags that needed more light up on the higher stage and so forth. Its been okay or actually great for the corals, don't get me wrong. But, what a pain for me to keep clean, as in algae!!! What an algae magnet it has become!!
Some have recommended the new black eggcrate, as it supposedly doesn't attract algae as much?
Once these frags are transferred to my new 120g, I'm taking out the frag rack, putting in more LR like you are thinking at different levels with plenty of outcroppings and just make it more natural for the corals.
I'm looking into BRS's "dry" rock, scaping it like I want with glue, nylon rods & epoxy then placing it into the tank...........
I'm sure you'll do fine (BTW, do you want a frag rack?).;D

It doesnt matter what color eggcrate you use, if the condition are right, the algae will grow. You need to find the source of your algae problem and address it.

I can send pics tonight if you want. Heck, I'll even send you the small fortune in 1/2" PVC fittings I've collected. Gotta clean my tank first before taking pics & before Luna has another fit!! :bouncylau
