I just got rid of the majano nem of this candy cane tree but there is this spaghetti like stuff all around the base. It comes off if I pull it. Its kinda waxy. It doesn't move or spread as far I know.
The canes are dying by the day.
I want reefing to be a hobby not a headache

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
    That is sponge I believe.

I do not think you should be dosing buffer for 4 days and Ca supplement for the next four days. I suspect the swings, differences in value are affecting your corals. I can not remember what your dosing with but I would

    1. Get a two part system
    2. Test and then dose accordingly for both Ca and ALK.
    3. Consider your utilization, it's better to dose small amounts of one or both to prevent the values from dropping and then playing catch up.
    4. Test every day for two weeks and do not dose anything until you have those values. Within reason adjust the volume to anticipated or calculated utilization. You just not have enough stony corals to be throwing your values so far off.

LPS only need a couple things, decent but not perfect water quality, consistent water chemistry and moderate lighting. If you rule out pest the previously mentioned variables are where I would focus.

+1 always test before you supplement and supplement accordingly.

This hobby is great but can be a headache untill your system stabilizes. Try and see the "fun" in trying to reach that goal....:s.

I agree with the id the white stuff, looks like a sponge to me too. Harmless and usually dies from starvation.

    Some grow as mine did

An occasional snack for my coral beauty as she swims by but it hasn't stopped it from growing.

Should you want to eliminate one exposure to air will kill it.....I kinda like mine being yellow helps, also had a black and white colonial tunicate in my old system but it withered... Sorry im rambling

for future IDs a good starting place.

...also anyone think it could be the vermetid snails bothering the coral?

Thanks guys..especially corailline you always answer and I have bombarded the forum since joining..its like a library for me.
When I first got the reef fdn test kit is showed alk and cal were low. Local f.s said dose these but not together so I was doing one in mrng and one at night but no real results. Red sea recommend dosing slowly which is why I was making 1litre of stock last 4 days but by then the other had got low so vicious circle. Red sea do stock called reef foundation a b and c I think its called maybe this is the way. One supp for all 3?
Neon tetras and discuss were a dodl compared to this
