My name is Colin Rose and I was born and raised in Northern California. I am the grandson of Lt. William H. Forsythe who was instrumental in the US invasion of Guam using amphibious assault vehicles in WWII. He told me, before he died, that he did everything he could in that invasion to spare the wildlife in the area, namely the marine life. Growing up on a farm in Montana my grandfather always had a certain respect and love for animals. When he was at war on the water and on the beaches he knew full well that they were fighting amongst nature and was always aware of it. These stories are what got me very interested in my two hobbies. Military history, and the ocean. I moved to Miami Fl. for six months to get my SCUBA certification. I saw some of the coolest marine life I could ever hope to see. I moved back to California where I am now majoring in molecular biology. (working with the NREL which is the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, developing algae biodiesel for jet fighters and rocket engines) My thesis will be algae bio-diesel. I hope to one day develop a genus of algae from which we can cost effectively extract bio-diesel, something that will truly be a source of renewable energy. Not only will it be completely renewable, but when algae grows, as well all know, it consumes C02. If used by enough people, in enough industries, the use of algae bio diesel would actually stabilize human greenhouse gas emissions, if not reverse it entirely. Right now, no species of algae that naturally exists can be processed in a way that creates fuel that is affordable enough to make it worth producing. The key will be to develop a new genus of algae in the laboratory as well as to refine and redefine the methods used to extract oil from algae.

So that is my history, my goal, and who I wish to be.
