    Hey all,

Yesterday i got my first carpet anemone. Its a true tan carpet anemone that cost me a fair bit lol. Its currently about 10cm in diameter. My pair of oscellaris clowns are already poking around it!.

Its been in the tank over night now and has opened up well and moved about 20cm. I will be interested to see where it stays permanently.

Has anyone else kept these. I have read all about them and think my tank can handle it, even though it might end up being a good chunk of it!. But i would love to hear from some others that have kept these and maybe get some neat tips.

I will post a picture later when I come home from work :).

Species? Different species prefer different things, one thing they all like is a LOT of light.
They are known fish eater too. Your tank is a 55g 48 x 12 x 20? Carpet will outgrow the width.

The species as far as I know is a Stichodactyla gigantea. Your right with the width, but I have seen many that move up the glass to like L shape and half their bodies on the sand half up the glass. I would love to see mine do the same.

You are right though if it does not choose a corner spot in the tank.

I will have adequate lighting, but as it grows it will end up having 1/4 of the tank to itself :p. And will require alot of rock moving.

They can get up to 30-36 inches in diameter. IIRC that species needs a good amount of flow, there are some experts on RC.

Prolly not. The carpet would probably eat the fish, one of my old LFS's had a 5inch clarkii get swallowed up by a 3 inch mini maxi!

It can definitely eat fish. Just make sure you keep it well fed ;)

This is my new carpet nem. You can see that it is not a maxi-mini and is a small Stichodactyla gigantea. The plan will be to leave it in this corner of the tank (the far right) and let it slowly grow and consume this 3rd of the tank. I will remove the two rocks shown to give it a good solid place to grow to begin with :), and more in due course.

Then I will eventually have 1/2 LPS/SPS and one half carpet nem :p. Will be awesome :).

I had a huge one about a 16" in diameter. A BIG oops on my part by not researching these. It was an impulse buy from pet co I bought for 30 bucks!!! Who could resist! Well after about a week it decimated a lot my fish. Lost about 8 anthias and stung the hell out of my tangs. Even almost killed my maroon clown. I sold it to my lfs for 80 bucks. Ha. And they still have the stupid thing many months later
