So here's my stand...dimensions roughly 36"Hx28"Lx22W". I'm wondering if it's ok to have an aquarium that won't actually have it's corners on top of the vertical 2x4s? My tank is going to be 24"L x 18"W (~30G), so it will sit just inside of the corners. The top piece is 1/4" plywood with a center 2x4 beam running front to back. I was originally going with an acrylic tank, but it's glass now. And I made the stand larger becuase I wanted more sump room....but maybe I jumped the gun in planning :-/

    Thanks in advance!

Just scrap the old tank and go with a bigger one ;-)

But really, it would probably be able to hold the weight of a fully stocked~30g aquarium...but I don't know how long. I wouldn't trust it in the long run. I'd much rather have the majority of the weight on the corners.

I agree,I would go with a tank that will set the 4 corners on the supports for long term especially with a 1/4" top even with the 2x4 center brace, otherwise nice looking well built stand btw.

Ok, thanks guys...that's what I was thinking too.

Well, that was a pain to build with my limited tools...so starting over is out. Guess that only leaves going bigger on the tank. Damn it, the whole point of this build was "small and simple". I'm eating my words already and I don't even have anything yet. Down the rabbit hole I go again...........;D

Question: If all corners should be on the ends, does that mean every nano tank has a small stand? What if you wanted to run a large sump?

Stand looks great, all you need to add is this maybe +1ing the situation but screw in 2-3 2x4's underneath your top. I think you did a good job with the tools you had.

That would definitely help. Also replacing the 1/4" with at least 1/2" ply is a must. I'm going to look at it closely today and see how I can strengthen it up w/o loosing room below. My sump is already a tight fit, and won't be able to be removed once inside.

Now that would be alot more viable option-to replace the top with 1/2" or 3/4".

Took the top off, made the tank footprint...and all is well :) Guess I had the wrong stand measurements in my head. Will replace the top with 3/4" ply for added piece of mind.

    Cheers-
