Nobody knows for sure why xenia pulses. Sometimes you get pulsing home and it wont pulse in your tank, often times it never will. Just the way it goes. And the opposite can happen too! ;)
But, pulsing is not in any form an indicator of how the coral is doing. As long as it is opening up correctly it should do fine.

Depends on how good your biological is at the moment. I added 35 pounds to my tank and the only thing I got was a small Algae Bloom. There are products to boost your biological filter for things just like this. I would look on...

Tropical Science Biolabs - Makers of Nitromax

They have Biological boosting products as well as other Reef safe all natural products.

Adding Liverock will add to your biological filter as well as raise your PH. A good rule of thumb is 1 to 1.5 pounds of liverock per gallon. I would say more like 1.5 per gallon.

    Xenia is very PH/Nitrate/Flow sensitive.

I really doubt you will lose any livestock with the liverock you add as long as it is cured.

    I had,

    2 fire shrimp
    1 cleaner shrimp
    2 sand stars
    4 tangs
    2 clowns
    1 firegoby
    1 diamond goby

They are still are there and had 0 issues as a matter of fact my water changes have been extended since the addition of the liverock from every 2 weeks to once a month.

    That is very interesting...

I have a firefish, an orange spotted goby and 2 clown fish too...

So I am tempted to try this however, I do not want to stress my fish right now as one is getting over some nuisance parasites...

    Do PH buffers work?

I am just trying to gain as much knowledge about this...

Be careful with buffers! I dosed with a ph buffer from kent and as soon as it hit the tank my xenia closed up (like the pic at the beginning of this thread) and has never opened back up! I have a 55g with about 65lbs of rock and all parameters have been good except nitrates higher than normal (lack of wc). Open your windows to increase your ph! Thanks to Luna for this info, it works for me! Hope this helps and if you find a way to get it to open, please message me and let me know, I'll try it with mine!
