I just saw the tank thread - http://www.3reef.com/forums/show-off-your-fish-tanks/150gal-zeo-95291.html - and am very impressed by the colors he is getting from his corals. He uses ZEOvit, which I believe is a chemical additive that greatly increases colors in his SPS...but, exactly, what is it? How does it work? What are your opinions on it?

I did a google search and well, I didn't really come up with much...

Here are some reviews from the Marine Depot website:

"I use this with the NextReef MR-1 reactor. Do not have a lot of experience with media reactors but can say it takes some load off the skimmer. My ORP is around 400 all the time and part of the day will drop to 375 but then back up it goes. Have a 75 gallon reef with mature fish I raised years ago. King angel, purple tang, marine grouper, large starfish, domino damnsel, snails. The Reactor came with a 132 g/hr pump and seems to even more stabilise readings. I also added some high capacity ceramic bio rings to top off the reactor due to 1 litre not being enough for that reactor.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends."

"Like almost all German made aquarium products sold in the USA, the engineering and construction are great, but the instructions are very poor, illustrations with labeling are few to none, and the user can be left scratching their head on how to set up and make adjustments.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends."

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Yes you are right it is combination of additives including electrolytes like potassium.

I agree they are beautiful systems. You can find more at zeovite.com if you have not found that yet.

It can get very complicated and expensive. I believe there are cheaper ways to do the same thing but I have not done the proper research. Just the initial forum that one completes is enough to make my head spin.::)

This is beginning to sound complicated. haha

    The Start-up:

    1) use 300ml of carbon passively for the first exchange[4wks] & knead this daily.

    2) use 1ltr. zeolites at a constant flow of 400 l/h[fill time is 9 seconds] Use all your previous from your other tank toward this 1ltr. amount. Do tumble the stones 2x's/day with 15 reps each time. Exchange in 4wks. thereafter, go to 6wks. intervals.

    3) dose 4 drops Bak & 1 drop Food7 daily for the 1st two wks. then dose these 3x's/wk.

    4) dose 0.4ml Start2 2x's/day

    5) dose 4 drops SP daily

    Once it is more stable:

    ZeoBac – 4 drops 2 x weekly
    ZeoStart – 0.4 ml 2 x daily
Sponge Power – 4 drops daily

What I have heard about Zeovit is that if used appropriately, can give great coloration in corals and fish, and a very healthy aquarium. The Zeo products however are intended to be used as the sole brand of chemicals or additives used, as in they don't recommend using other brand products at the same time.

So if I used Zeo additives, I use Zeo and nothing else(i.e. Pphosban). What about carbon or GFO?

Aside from maybe being complicated to start, why don't more people use it? Is there a bad side to it?

ZEO as a whole in Germany is to what we have as seachem etc. In america

It is a company that specializes in reactors and extremely fine tuned products to run in their reactors. They sell amino acids, phosphate reducers, nitrogen reducers, and on and on and on...

The whole movement with the company was to get your tank down to just the bare essentials and to have no dirt, filth, grime, or anything. Essentially you are depriving your tank of all nutrients. Once you get it to this point you then add their line of additives (which have been specifically produced to target specific zoox) and so say that your yellows are fading--then you add a few drops of product A for yellow enhancement. Next day your blues are washed out so you add a few drops of product B.
Now I'm not sure about this but from the sounds of it, when you get this far into the process I'm pretty sure your starving your corals so much that they rely on the zeo additives to live. Now I could be wrong because I've never used zeo, but I'm pretty sure that is the whole concept of the system

    P.S. Did I mention $$$$$$$$
