I never had diatoms in my 55g. And its been more than a year. I did however have a tonne of cyano.
Its so moisture doesn't get in and ruin them. After time they loosen up abit. If you have trouble you can wedge them open with a screw driver.
Mine sits at a consistent 25.5 Degrees Celcius. 55g with a 1/6 HP Chiller and two heaters running.
Might keep the lights on to still promote corraline growth? and not get nuisance algae etc?
I have a bristletooth tang in a 55g so a Kole tang would fit easily in the 72g.
I think ideally, you would set the 30g up, use a combination of live sand from your 55g and some new sand. Then move most of your live rock and wait...
It could cause an ammonia spike. But that wouldn't matter if it was cycling. The cycle would be significantly shortened if you used both live rock...
