I would say probably not because the water is always moving in the ocean. Given the exception of tank raised fish.

I had one under a 5 watt fluorescent for a long time and it seemed to be doing great.

You will get a lot of head lost but yes its definitely possible I have seen it quite a few times. You may need a stronger pump though.
I didn't feed because my sump is filled with deitrus.

I would say yes. One of my LFS's doesn't use Halides and they have some of the nicest corals around.
