    does size matter I don't know if this will help you.. I have 1" going from sump to tank. I have up to 1200gph overflow. 2@1" going in to a 2" pipe...

    Is this a good HOB skimmer?

    Not at all most cheap skimmers don't make froth, so they don't do much. you could mod it...put an air stone in the skimmer. that helped my 29 buck...
