I would think that as long as you didnt cover it completely with glue, you should be ok.........it really depends on how much you covered it.........
are you saying that the water you are changing smells or the water that you are using for water changes smells?
I prefer black, I spray painted mine. I think it makes the colors stand out more, especially once the coralline builds up on it.
