I would go 8 lamp.... Skip Tek and get Aquactinic SLRs, more space or more lamps..... either way its a good thing!!
the other issue is the teklight reflectors are not the best out there, for a 2 foot tall tank, you really should get something better than tek...

Interesting delevopment... We have 40 breeders here at the shop for coral frags, one has a Tek 6 lamp, one has a Tek 4 lamp and a TX5. All are 36"...

Its a great unit but there is definitely better... I have recently heard that the NEP can with the same lamps almost put out the same PAR as a Tek...
I would just replace the ballast... They are cheap enough and will save you the headache!!
