I understand that. You can run HOB equipment or even a HOB fuge. But IMO a frag tank should have some type of filtration other than water changes....

Oh, I guess I should have addressed that...you'll need a fuge or some kind of filtration. A refugium will be the simplest and most economical.
My display tank has maybe a 1" or 3/4" sandbed. That's it. The tank's crawling with pods, worms, and bacteria.
I suppose you could do the Tupperware idea, though I really don't know how much bacteria that will add.
