Take coral out of tank to do cutting...then rinse well before putting back in. Sarcophyton corals can release toxins when injured...

I recall have same problem with toadstool and colts in early days of my tank. Expect my water params were not as stable as they should have been...
Does not take much obstruction to really reduce efficiency. I pull mine and clean monthy...usually needs it.
