That's strange, because my tank seems to follow the opposite logic; I have zero detectable nitrates, but detectable phosphates, and can't get rid of...
I have to agree about using kalk paste, but the syringe +attachments that the aiptasia x kit comes with are the best!
I agree that water and salt should be mixed first before adding any sand or live rock... you will get the best results this way... Also, Get a TDS...

IME, the lower the nitrates, the better for SPS growth and color... It's possible to get to zero with a heavily stocked tank and generous feeding...
