    Yeah I don't think I would trust that stuff: Bonide® Hydrated Lime (97980) - Soil & Conditioners - Ace Hardware does it have ingredients listed?

    The plusrite ebay bulbs are suppose to be decent. But usually the ones that come with any fixture aren't very good. Good to keep around as a back up....

    Starphire glass - worth the cost?

    The thicker the glass the more you would want starphire. I have a 3/4" regular glass tank and an acrylic tank. The green really bugs me here lately...

    Sounds like you want to build a lid not a hood. It's not a good idea. Most gas exchange is at the surface. Evaporation is just a part of the hobby.
