damsels are good, hardy fish. feed them some sea veggies or something, herbivores mainly in the wild.
what other fish do you have in the tank? brittle star killing 3 fish is a pretty unlikely culprit...

predators are something to think of. Got shrimp? Shrimp love to kill snails and what not. It can't be a heat issue, they can easily handle upper 80s...
