yes, the 20 will be the perfect size for the 55, it also has enough space for a good skimmer and decent size fuge. good luck and post pics :)

one word...patience once the tank is established (in about 6 months to a year) the clean up crew should eliminate the need to disturb the sand bed

the compressed gas is co2 for the reactor and the oxogen is measured with an orp probe I think
your plan sounds pretty good, but I would suggest at least a small sump that will allow a skimmer that will handle any bioload you add to the display...
