    +1 to screen tops using clear mesh from BRS. Easy to build, and I didn't notice any light diffusion.

    So back to the original question lol. Are skimmers bad? NO. Are they necessary? NO. I personally don't like doing alot of WC's so I love my skimmer....

    Just a word of caution. Be careful with "medications" for ich etc... Some of them contain copper which can be very detrimental to a reef aquarium.

    Not sure, what else you might use, but silicone doesnt really bond to acrylic or pvc. It will "stick" for a little while, but if you are needing it...

    Thanks for the compliments on the rock. It really is a trick getting it just the way you want it, and this isn't even that big of a tank :)

    I've heard of some people isolating the rock he is in and then pour some seltzer water on it. Apparently the bubbles rile it up enough to come out.
