    You can get a stand-alone skimmer, but you'll need to feed it with a small pump in the DT if you don't run a sump.

    shutting a system down at night

    Are you peeps using low noise standpipes (Durso, Stockman, etc)? You can shut the skimmer off, but I wouldn't shut off the flow to the tank off....

    We're trying to cut down...as some of our fish grow out, we'll be losing some setups. I have one fish I need to move as I type this.

    By adding "a few PH's" to your setup, you've for all intents and purposes added a "static" (laminar flow) wavemaker, so I wouldn't say "entirely...
