    Yeah, sounds to me you're over-tightening them. Using anything but the gasket (or anything in addition to) and you're likely to develop a leak.

    I'd attribute it to disturbing/rinsing the sand bed. You may have been better off to use new sand as opposed to re-use the old.

    Blue leg hermits? They won't do this is the coral is alive. It's either dying from some other cause, or your hermits aren't blue legs.
