if u can get a sump goin then do it :) it will how ever require an overflow box which could mean u have to drill some holes or buy an after market...

i have a airstone in my sump because after reading a thread it said about water heating up and having less oxygen content and air stone in the sump...

en i had a FW setup i used to just have a couple algie eaters to do that job they were cheap as hell and were very efficient at cleaning the gravel...

IMO its not a must have allthough it does have its benifits if u change it weekly? i personally dont use it in my canisters
