Congrats on the G2! From my understanding if there is enough flow through the u-tube the bubbles should be sucked right through and down the plumbing...
The u-tube it should have enough flow to suck them through. Can you get some more flow from the return pump?
Hey, surferdude What skimmer did you end up getting? And if you're looking for something inexpensive why not buy a tank and put in your own baffles...

Look into Bubble Magus skimmers. Probably the highest quality skimmer you can get for the money IMO...

Have you considered placing the BM diagonal in the sump(if that makes sense)? That's what i'm gonna do with my NAC6 in my 10g sump to save some room.
Welcome to 3reef, NJsaltydog! Agreed with Colorado, ditch the wet/dry and go with a sump/fuge for a reef tank. I think you would be much happier.
