My sea cucumber constantly breaks up the surface, possibly why I havent succummed to that problem so far.
I have those all over my tank. They are harmless, and I've always called them spagetti worms.
I've only had noise issues when I got sand down in the impellor area. From what it sounds like your impellor is sitting kanted, and hitting the edge....
