i've done that with mine and yes, you just have to make sure the cord goes up and out of the chamber. otherwise you'll get some what of a "syphon"...

i have the pre-skimmer on my remora (mj 1200) and it works wonders. it's tricky to keep the right level of water in the tank throughout the day...
