sorry to hear about the losses Todd but sounds like most made it through. I'm sure the big WC and getting rid of the detritus will be helpful
as long as you know the risk of hitchhikers - you can put in additional live rock - I like to add pieces periodically for biological diversity
I don't know about that specific one but do know that reef octopus makes a quality product
it also is quite stinky as well :) my very first reef I started with uncured rock - it was really cool to see such a variety of life on it

looks like you've gotten some good advice - definitely a sump is the way to go. As stated, the bigger you can make the sump - the better but it does...

is that uncured rock? if so, you'll probably find a lot of various critters on it as you go through your cycle.
it's awfully cool looking. I can tell by your pictures it's not a long spine. Most urchins are reef safe although they do mow through coralline algae...

Is there anyway to get a closer picture? Are the spots anywhere else besides the top fin? Is the fish acting and eating normally otherwise?
