    well you need to test the others...for the most part nitrates arent gonna harm fish..its the ammonia and nitrites that are prolly doing the damage to...

    i think you will be fine.. big water changes, siphoning like everyone said..i would also adjust your skimmer to skim a little on the wetter side.....
