The leak could have occurred just recently. The electricity messes up their lateral lines and cause problems with the nervous system.
The green stuff is algae where it is a strong green. The other more yellow like could be a sponge or possible a mushroom. Need pics of the other...

I think that is a good idea to remove some of what is bothering your fish. Try adding new carbon also.
It just recirculates not exchanges. You need to exchange the air to see any benefits. An hour or two will work wonders if done daily.
They look great IMO also. I agree that it could be like Cheryl said or they had something from the LFS.
OK the pump falling into the sand could be a likely cause. I would still air out the house to see if the pH will bump up.
