the white is coralline that has not changed to purple yet or has lost that color. Are you talking about the brownish stuff that is on the rock next...

can you share why the store told you to turn the lights off? if you're cycled, there shouldn't be a reason to turn off your lights for a protracted...

you can try spreading some scrapings of coralline in the tank - I attribute coralline growth to dripping kalk but I could be wrong on that.......
