Your fish look fine. I wouldn't use/do anything like that til' last resort. You start worrying about "spots" just before your fish are so covered...
I don't know what vertonex is.
Looks like you came out of this with a larger/better system and sand/rock you can trust. Next tank I set up will be all base.
I wouldn't put one on my tank.
Yes, the spots could be partial to the unstable parameters and the changes to get it stable. Keep good water quality, make sure fish are eating...

If your fish is eating well, you have good water quality and it's not in a stressful environment then I wouldn't look at the spot twice.;D
