    I run carbon 24/7 in a PM reverse substrate reactor changing it out every 4 to 5 wks. I can tell by the look of my elegance if it is time to change...

    Amount of Skim-mate related to water params?

    When I feed or stick my hands in the tank my skimmer seems to flat line a bit and doesn't produce much skim mate.

    You need to seed for coralline to help the tank get started after nuking all the rock, try not to cut corners on this type of cycle.

    Depends on the type of corals you want to keep. Mushroom and easy stuff like that then the T5's will do but if your up for the challange of SPS then...
