You aren't going to want sand/substrate in there either.

Finding the source is much better than "masking" it.
You may be removing beneficial bacteria by vacuuming the sand/substrate. Reading your post it's the only thing I can suggest "not to do".

Sounds like that's the reason. In a 155 gallon tank you may want to look at a clean-up crew package. Check through 3reef sponsors or ask your lfs for...

It's actually not all that out of the ordinary depending on a few variables. Age of tank, clean-up crew, 6 month old pc bulbs, etc........
