Many of the snails are from tidal pools and are used to searching for food out of the water. They also travel between pools.
There seem to be two sizes, the one you have and there are ones that have shells that are twice the diameter. The big ones really irritate corals...
I don't have one but it is supposed to be the best DI out there for reef tanks. I just ordered a new Maxcap RODI since my current filter crapped out...
I would set them so they all disturb the surface or one pair at minimum. I would put them about an inch or so below the surface to achieve this....
