Look into African rift lake cichlids, I think they are generally smaller and would work for either. More colorful than most South American cichlids...

As long as your rock is on the tank bottom you should be OK. If it is fine sand there might be a problem as the burrow will most likely keep...
I agree with this completely. If you have the money get the PAR 30 in all white for growth, then put the frags under 20000K light to color them up...

Not the corals you are starting with. I would avoid putting high light SPS underneath the the glass panels though.
