I don't know about the quality of the skimmer but that is a great idea. You will want to get a light for the refugium to grow macro algae.

Rock in the fuge or sump usually creates nitrate issues because they give areas for detritus to stagnate.
Timing is about right, water changes and keeping your feeding under control. Get a good CUC.
