I would keep the Fungia on the sand and hope for the best. I know I don't need to tell you not to throw away the skeleton if it does die.

They might have some bird netting. I would use 2 layers and off set them so the knots of one layer are in the middle of the hole of the other.
While the refugium is not necessary it does make your keeping much easier specially since you will be increasing the water volume.
