Butterfly will be a problem. A top of the line 6 bulb T5 will be good for any animal you want. An 8 bulb from most others will work. Let us know...

The water going through the drain is being moved by gravity and the return is be moved mechanically. Gravity needs a larger opening to be effective....

Stirring up your sand can cause more problems than good. Just seed new sand with a cup or two of sand skimmed from the top of your live sand.
