The snail is most likely cleaning up after the clam died. The clam may have been in trouble when you got it. It takes a long time for them to die...

If the tank is FOWLR no, but if you have hard corals then you will need to dose calcium, alkalinity and magnesium.
You should get a return pump that operates at 5 to 10 times your sumps volume at head. So you want one that runs 150 to 300 gph at head.
